Arlington, VA – While regional and state unemployment rates were generally lower in June, 24 states recorded increases from a year ago, and the national jobless rate still remains high at 9.5%,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released today.
Gretchen Hamel, Executive Director of Public Notice, said the following:
“Washington has been trying to convince the American people that we are in the midst of recovery summer, but the American people know the truth. These latest unemployment numbers just confirm what the American people already know: this economy isn’t creating enough jobs.
“The policies Washington has been pushing haven’t created jobs and haven’t grown the economy—it has just grown our government and our national debt.
“It’s time that policymakers set a new course. They need to stop overspending and return resources to the private sector so that companies can start creating real jobs.”

Until basic fundamental changes happen this problem will persist. When average families cannot afford to send their children to college in order to become educated to go on and make these kinds of changes we will be caught in a viscious downward spiral. When average, ordinary citizens who could make a difference in the world of politics are excluded because the cost of running a campaign is unachievable, these problems will persist. When big business is running the the government and squashing smaller, more efficient and innovative businesses, this problem will persist. The economy has “grown” because large corporations have cut jobs (which they don’t intend to replace) through the use of technology and outsourcing. They are not in the business of creating jobs, they are in the business of making money and human labor is expensive. American workers will continue to have to work for less and less to compete with offshore labor. When American workers are willing to work for a $1 a day then the jobs will come back to this country en mass. So it’s not just jobs that are required, it’s well paying jobs and lots of them that are required.
