This week it was revealed that the IRS has spent nearly $50 million over the last few years on lavish conferences for its employees. How much is $50 million?

  • Social Security Benefits for 3,626 Recipients. In fiscal year 2012, the average annual benefit for Social Security was $13,789. $50 million would cover annual benefits for 3,626 Social Security beneficiaries.
  • Benefits for Nearly 4,260 Disabled Veterans. In fiscal year 2011, the average disability benefit for veterans was $11,737. $50 million would cover annual benefits for 4,260 soldiers.
  • Medicare Benefits for 4,415 Recipients. In fiscal year 2012, the average annual benefit for Medicare was $11,325. $50 million would cover annual benefits for 4,415 Medicare beneficiaries.
  • Pell Grants for More Than 13,560 College Students. In 2011, the average Pell Grant award was $3,685. $50 million could cover grants for 13,569 college students.
