Making spending personal

October 6, 2011

For years, the government has been spending far more than it can afford. This has left the country with a massive public debt burden. We often say that the federal government should learn a lesson from everyday Americans and learn how to live within their means; budgeting and spending responsibly over the long-term.

But what if the tables were turned? What if Americans took their cue from the federal government and spent far more than what they take in? Well it isn’t pretty.

    ” . . . the US government spent $1.60 for every $1.00 it earned.”

Excuse me, but the US government doesn’t EARN its money; it appropriates it from people who did earn it. It does not provide a decent return. Lately, it seems as if most of my money appropriated by the government is used to strip me of my freedoms – this is not a ‘service’ I like paying for.

While the graphic is most disturbing I agonize over the right solution. Our two biggest expenditures by the Federal Government are Medicare and Social Security. Noone wants there benefits cut so where do we get the money to pay for these items. Even if u tax the “rich” it wont help reduce the $14Trillion deficit. We need to put people back to work!!!!

While this news IS disturbing, what’s even MORE disturbing is the fact that “we the people” continue to elect these buffoons. From 1960 to 2010, every year a Democrat has been President, he has increased the federal deficit an average of ~$250 BILLION per year. Republican Presidents in that same time span have increased the deficit ~$278 BILLION per year. Neither party really wants to do ANYTHING about it, and we keep allowing them to get away with it.

If the medical/insurance pricing facade could be cleaned up it would be a good start. Seeing such absurd prices on paperwork makes me wonder. The insurance companies don’t pay those prices, so who does? I don’t know how to fix it that either.

On a related note, Medicare and Social Security could both be cut significantly without harming anyone if they just start clamping down on the fraud and sending system-abusers to jail.
