March Spending Madness: Elite Eight

March 28, 2011

As this past weekend has made clear, the madness of college basketball in March is matched only by the madness of the federal government’s insistence on spending way beyond its means. And just like success on the court is determined by discipline and hard work, a sustained economic recovery will rely on fiscal discipline and making difficult (and sometimes unpopular) decisions.

In the second round of March Spending Madness, the eight proposed cuts that survived the first round now go head to head in our version of the ubiquitous basketball bracket.

Check out the match-ups below and let us know which is the better cut. Be sure to stay tuned to Bankrupting America to see which cuts make it to the next round.

Eliminate farm subsidies ($16.4 billion)

VS.

Cut federal aid to District of Columbia ($400 million)

Cut defense overhead ($25 billion)

VS.

Sell abandoned property assets ($17.7 billion)

Require federal employers and employees to contribute equally to the federal retirement fund ($114 billion over 10 years)

VS.

Eliminate foreign aid ($19 billion)

Eliminate improper payments in Medicare ($48 billion)

VS.

Eliminate earmarks ($15.9 billion)

We cannot continue with the same careless spending. Priorities must be changed in our Nation. None of the options are going to get 100% support but some are just common sense. Defense must be funded but government workers should have to pay the same taxes, retirement (Social Security, Medicare) as the rest of the nation. Their retirement should reflect their work, just like the rest of us.
