Arlington, Va—Gretchen Hamel, executive director of Public Notice, issued the following statement in response to the announcement that June’s unemployment rate was unchanged at 8.2 percent percent with the economy adding only 80,000 jobs:

Today’s job numbers will undoubtedly elicit a strong reaction from those in Washington either looking to make political hay or spin a failing economy, but it won’t surprise most Americans. As their elected representatives continue to waste time trying to score political points, Americans’ frustration level with government grows.

Who can blame them? Washington is now trying to back out of its self-imposed trigger to develop a long-term deficit-reduction strategy.  Experts acknowledge the connection between our debt and sluggish job creation. Washington’s refusal to address the problem portends weak job numbers for the foreseeable future.
