Wednesday Waste: Flushing Cash

Wednesday Waste | January 16, 2013

It would appear that George W. Bush’s Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne planned to spend a considerable amount of time admiring the interior of his bathroom.

ABC reports that, according to a recent Freedom of Information Act request, the secretary’s bathroom underwent renovations in 2007 costing $222,000, which included adding a $3,500 “sub-zero” refrigerator (because who wants to make a trip to the bathroom and the kitchen?) and a faucet priced at $689 (which we can only assume pours water imported from the finest hot springs of central Asia).

In a time when America is seeing year after year of runaway deficits and an unprecedented $16 trillion national debt burden, why are Washington bureaucrats enjoying opulent bathroom facilities that cost the equivalent of a middle-class home? We must hold our leaders to a higher standard of fiscal responsibly. After all, it’s our money they’re sending down the drain.
