Bankrupting America Releases “‘Twas the Night Before Cliff-mas”
New Version of an Old Classic Urges Fiscal Responsibility in Cliff Negotiations
Arlington,Va. – Bankrupting America, a project of Public Notice, today released “’Twas the Night Before Cliff-mas,” a 14-page book that parodies the famous poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” with a clever take on the fiscal cliff negotiations and how we came to the precipice of fiscal disaster. “‘Twas the Night before Cliff-mas” comes as a friendly reminder that as the holidays approach, so does the fiscal cliff.
The poem references key leaders in the fiscal cliff talks, emphasizing the need for spending cuts. Copies of the book will be sent to members of Congress as well as President Obama to lift their spirits during the final weeks of negotiations and hopefully inspire some responsibility.
Public Notice Executive Director Gretchen Hamel released the following statement:
“Americans’ concern over the fiscal cliff and its impact on our fragile economy is only exceeded by their frustration over Washington’s willful ignorance of the root of our budget mess – spending. As Christmas approaches, “‘Twas the Night Before Cliff-mas” is jovial way of highlighting the serious problems of irresponsible spending and partisan gridlock that have allowed our debt to grow to more than $16 trillion. With lawmakers planning to cut their holiday break short to continue negotiating, I’m sure each will keep a copy of our book handy if they’re ever in doubt on what to do.”
