The 4th of July is about celebrating our national independence and what better way to celebrate than by taking a tour around our nation’s capital to learn how your federal government has spent your hard earned money?

This six stop tour will highlight some of Washington’s best kept spending secrets and will surely make you feel very proud about our wonderful governing bureaucracy. Once you’ve finished our free tour, be sure to tip your tour guide by tweeting or posting a review on Facebook using #WashingtonWastedTour.

Stop 1: Department of the Interior   Can you guess the price tag of a government rodeo? Well, the Department of the Interior spends $80 million to round up wild ponies and the price continues to increase every year! But the really sad news is only 20% of the horses will ever find homes.

Stop 2: The Internal Revenue Service Wine, pornography, diet pills — some might call it a good time on a Saturday night, but in reality those are just a few of the items IRS bureaucrats were inappropriately charging to their government credit cards. But that’s not all! Don’t forget the $49 million the IRS racked up on 225 conferences in a two-year span. All that spending isn’t easy, so what better way to reward our big spending civil servants then by handing out $70 million in bonuses to IRS staff this year?

Stop 3: National Endowment of the Arts (NEA)   As you have seen so far the government really likes to put on a good show, and it doesn’t come  cheap! Maybe that is why the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) spent $1,188,382 on puppetry. Unfortunately, no one knows the release date of the NEA’s next puppet production.

Stop 4: Department of Agriculture (USDA) Checking the weather for our Independence Day fireworks, why don’t you just ask a cow? That’s what the U.S. Department of Agriculture has done. They have spent $19.5 million to study climate change on cows! We wonder if their reporting is any more accurate than the weatherman’s?

Stop 5: Department of Transportation   With the NBA season over and the draft completed, everyone seems to be going through a little bit of basketball withdrawals. However, Washington has solved their problem by spending $21,000 on basketball equipment to help them get ready for next season, which starts October 29, 2013. That’s what we call a bureaucratic SLAM-DUNK!

Stop 6: Environmental Protection Agency Bathrooms can be pretty smelly places but the EPA is spending good money to investigate what Chinese pigs are “producing” while they use the facilities. The agency has spent $141,450 to study swine manure… which is lot to flush down the toilet. But pigs will be pigs. And so will bureaucrats!

Well folks, there’s your tour of the super secret spending in Washington, DC. And of course, this was just a small sampling of how the federal government is using your tax dollars.

Be sure tell us what you think of our tour on Facebook and Twitter by including hashtag #WashingtonWastedTour in your post!
